Multiple news outlets report a truck stopped in front of the bus in East Point Wednesday, preventing the bus from clearing the train tracks. The CSX train then clipped the back of the bus.
Five passengers and the bus driver were taken to area hospitals. Police say a 65-year-old man has serious injuries. The other passengers had minor injuries. Three were taken to the to Atlanta Medical Center main campus. Two were taken to south campus and one refused treatment.
East Point Police are searching for the driver of the red pickup truck that stopped in front of the bus.
EAST POINT, GA (CBS46) –
Several passengers and a bus driver were taken to the hospital after a MARTA bus and freight train collided in East Point.
A CSX train hit the MARTA bus at the railroad crossing on Welcome All Road and Southmeadow Parkway West.
According to CBS46’s Mike Dunston, the driver of the MARTA bus, 38-year-old Dwayne Magee, was trying to make a left turn on Welcome Hill Road and got stuck in traffic while the rear of the bus was still on the tracks.
According to Dunston, who was first on the scene, the train hit the bus, spun it around and hit the bus a second time.
“I can’t remember in my time with MARTA that we’ve had an accident like this, with a train,” said MARTA spokesman Lyle Harris.
Paramedics transported five passengers and the bus driver to a hospital. There were no injuries to the train crew.
A 65-year-old man on the bus was seriously injured with neck pain and head contusions, according to a spokesperson with the East Point Fire Department.
That man remains hospitalized at last check.
A 65-year-old man reported serious injuries. The other passengers injuries are reportedly minor.

All but the 65 year old male have since been released from the hospital.
Operator Dwayne Magee has also been released from the hospital.
The accident happened at Welcome All Road and Ben Hill Road
According to East Point Police Chief Cliff Chandler, a truck stopped in front of the bus, preventing the bus from clearing the train tracks. The CSX train then clipped the back of the bus.

Magee, an employee of MARTA since 2009, has received a mandatory drug and alcohol test and has been placed on leave, with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.
